getting adjusted

well we are adjusting to our new addition. kinsley is doing ok, she has her moments for sure, but seems to adore adley so far. we are doing well also, sleeping pretty good actually and i did ok on my first day alone. so far i have only had one day fully on my own because my mom came to visit for a few days so she is helping around the house and with the kids!

little miss adley...well she is alot like her sister!!! she does not scream like kinsley did which is nice, but her latch is wrong so feedings are difficult but already better then with kinsley. i still have to use the shield and probably will for awhile if not the whole time again. she spits up alot and i think she may have reflux but not as bad as kinsley. she also squeaks alot when breathing, the dr says she is ok and her lungs are clear but i am keeping a close eye on that. overall she is an awesome baby and seems to be less high maintenance then kinsley although that could all change any day!

all in all we are doing well and it is night and day from how i felt at this point after kinsley.

climbing, milk

yep found her on the 5th stair the other day. i thought she couldn't get up them so i wasn't worried...well i was wrong!!!she went up like a pro...had to buy more gates!!!! she is amazing me lately how fast she is moving from one skill to the next, i swear everyday she does something new.

we also are officially done nursing and now on whole milk. she just weened herself and was done. i was done too tho!!! i hope next time to go longer and actually enjoy the experience more. no one i know had a baby that weened themselves like she did so it was crazy. i made sure to call the doc to be sure it was ok, they said a few weeks till she is 1 so it is fine. side note...a few weeks till she is 1!!! yikes! oh and she had no reaction to milk, she just drank it down like it was water!

nursing

well i think we are nearing the end of our nursing days. kinsley has pretty much weened herself and because the experience wasn't very pleasant i am totally cool with that. so even though she is just shy of 1 i think we will be done anyways. i don't plan on giving her milk till 1 unless the doctor says otherwise for some reason but i don't think he will. i just hope the experience gets better with the next baby!!!

funny story: so usually babies will associate their mothers with nursing but since we have had such difficulty kinsley actually only realizes it is time to eat when she sees the nipple shield!! love it. so i will have to throw those away...kinda of exciting to be done with that though!!!!

formula trial day 2

well here we are nearing the end of our 48 hour trial and i can't say we have seen much change. we have had some happy moments and some screaming moments, but nothing different then what a good day would have been for kinsley anyways without changing anything. we do have good days here and there. i did notice that her eating habits are crazy and will discuss that with the doc when we go back to talk about all of this, i will also ask if we should see a pediatric GI.

overall though i am thinking we may just have a very demanding child on our hands, which is fine, i just wanted to make sure i covered the bases in case something more serious was happening. i mean when you combine me and brandon you are bound to get a kinsley!!!!!!!

so as you can just imagine if you know my history i am extremely sore after all this pumping to keep my supply up and i am not looking forward to the first few times i breast feed again, it is going to hurt. luckily i still have shield around here to use for some protection, but it will still hurt. i did get an ok amount of milk though so my freezer supply is looking good! maybe a date night is in order, we need to use up the older milk in the freezer anyways before it goes bad. after all this a night out with brandon would be nice!

learning

motherhood is one big PHD!!!!!!! (i think i have earned one) i feel like all i am doing is learning more and more information everyday and seriously can't even remember it all. it is so crazy how one decision takes days worth of thinking, talking with other moms, talking to the doctor, googling and so forth. i am thankful to have found a mom's club because a lot of those mom's have helped me with kinsley's many issues. if one mom didn't experience you can bet one did. even though all of our views don't match we all support each other's decisions. it is really nice to have that.

anyways, the more i learn about the formula the less i like it. ya ya, "they" say it is just as good as breast milk, but i am not buying that, i have read the ingredient list and that stuff is not in my milk!!! still to each their own.

i have been asked a lot lately by many people why after all the issues i have had that i keep breastfeeding. ya being free is huge but beyond that it is a personal struggle. i have spent nights on the phone with friends trying to decide what to do and i just can't stop. it is so hard to explain but feeding kinsley is one of the greatest experiences i have ever had. it is the one time of day i know i am doing the right thing, with out questioning myself a million times. it just feels right even after everything. ya formula makes it easier i guess to do things, since i can only pump so much and it only last so long in the freezer (6month, no bad!). but to me it has all been worth it. i would rather have ready to go milk then mix formula everywhere i go while the baby screams.

again i state i am not downing any formula feeding moms, totally your choice, just not for me.

these days things are better i can actually go out in public and not use the nipple shield. that was huge!!! i fee like i deserve a cookie!!!!

i have also been asked how long i plan to breastfeed. i am still unsure about that answer. when i was in pain i would say i was done at 1 year, but now i don't know. i am in no hurry at all to start real food. in fact i have always hated feeding babies and have always said i would skip baby food all together and just smash real people food for my kid, or just hand her the soft pear or whatever food she is on. i still intend to do that, no jars of food for me! no that does not mean i am making my baby food. no i am actually just baking the potato and cooling it down before just giving it to her, or cutting the pear and handing her a piece, or making the peas and smashing each one with my finger. not pureeing anything into tiny little ice cube trays!! if i could i would probably breastfeed exclusively for the whole first year, but i gave birth to a moose so i am not sure she will make it that long. the doctor will help me makes that choice based on her weight gain and ready signs. i would also like to wait for at least her first tooth. apparently that is actually the bodies sign that the digestive system is ready or food.

(see so much learning!!!)

still standing

well we are still alive around here. i am amazed that we are at times!!!!!!

so here are a few updates...

breastfeeding, since i stopped everything, things have gotten a lot better. the burning has stopped, along with basically everything else. i am still using a nipple shield to feed kinsley but that is ok. i only have a weird tingling feeling during and after she eats for about an hour or less, and i think the shield is giving me a small rash...but compared to where we were things are much better. i am going to continue with one side feedings and using the shield for now and in a few weeks check in with the LC again. at this point i am going to continue breastfeeding, i am feeling so much better and can easily continue like this.

a run down of how it went: (more for me then anything!)
pain from the 2nd day in the hospital- should have said something then
1 week old first LC appointment
multiple pumping schedules
countless LC visits (i have seen at least 4 LCs now)
2 medications for mastitis
4 rounds of meds for thrush
2 nipple creams
acidophilus - to counter act the side effects of medications- it decreases yeast production
B6 (i have done this 2 times now, helps with nipple issues)
gentian violet- this was to try and get rid of the thrush, i had a resistant type of yeast!!!
nipple shields
hand expression when the pumping was to painful
LOTS of pain and frustration
(This spanned about 6 weeks)

and after all that, the doing nothing seems to have worked the best...go figure. although who is to say that things just didn't take awhile to kick in. who knows how or why but things are getting better!!!

Kinsley update:
she is doing very well, she eats like a champ and i think she is growing. she is no longer smooshy :( she looks like a kid now and not a newborn anymore. ( i will do a large picture post soon) we think she may have some colic. basically if she is awake she is screaming. it hasn't been like this the whole time but for the last week or so it has been non stop. we will see how that goes for now, and may try some gripe water to see if it helps. also she seems to have some trouble passing gas and pooping, she grunts and pushes for along time sometimes an hour or more before she gets it out. i will be asking the doctor about that one.

other then that she sleeps well at night, usually up once in the middle of the night, we are very lucky with that. Kinsley likes belly time when she is not screaming!!! she was loving her bouncy seat but that has faded for a bit, i am sure she will like it again. when we put her on her back she tends to roll to her side. maybe she will roll over soon!!! but who knows!

11-10-09 she cooed for the first time!!! of course it was to daddy, she only screams at mommy!!! but she is definitely cooing and talking in the few non screaming moments we have.

mommy and daddy update:
mommy is still feeling rather overwhelmed with everything. we took a trip to toledo that went very well. i had a lot of help which was great. i am sure i will feel better soon, it is just hard to have one thing after the next go wrong and then have your baby just scream at you all day. luckily i have good friends and family. i just need to get better at asking for help and getting away for a bit. tonia is keeping a close eye on me and will make sure i am doing good!!! Brandon is of course taking great care of me too!!
as for the toledo trip we met colbie, my friend beths new baby. she is super cute and tiny!! i also went to visit my kids at school. they were so excited to see me and i was so excited to see them. they are all so special to me. they loved kinsley!!! i spent the whole day with them, and kelsey came along to help. she was a great help all week, she changed diapers and everything! i was so sad to leave my kids again, i may have to go back before the year is over. we also saw alot of family and friends at the grandparents house. it was nice to share her with everyone and show her off to those who have not seen her yet!

daddy:
daddy is doing good. he still gets up at night with me and changes the diaper while i prepare to feed kinsley. when she is done he swaddles her back up and puts her back to sleep. he has changed stores again and is getting used to the new people, he seems to like them so far. i know he misses us like crazy at work and comes home to even more work, but he is doing great and is so wonderful to me. (not to say he doesn't have his moments!! but then so do i!)
brandon did not get to go to toledo with us. he really missed his little girl. he was so happy when we got home.

we will be making a trip to PA in about 2 weeks. we will see some family and friends. again brandon will have to stay here and work. it is hard to be without him. i am sure i will have a lot of help at home though and it will go fine.

callie and stella are still doing well with kinsley, callie is her protector and stella is just recently aware of kinsleys presence in the house, she is a special cat!

on an up swing!

i feel like the breast feeding issue is on an u swing. on friday i decided i was done with all pumping, medications, creams, etc. none f them were working so i decided since nothing was working we were going to try nothing and see if that works. the burning is basically gone, i had a few moments today but nothing like i was, i am still itchy and sore but both seem better. not sure why these things have gotten better but i am glad we are moving in the right direction. i am feeding only on one side at a time in hopes to regulate my supply and so i know one side is getting empty so i will hopefully keep from getting blocked ducts. after reading some articles found by tonia (my doctor!!!!!!) i really think i have an over supply issue combined with over active let down which both are causing Kinsleys choking, gagging, tough feeding, and burping issues. she does all of this a lot and has a hard time getting burps out, as well as will refuse to eat but is hungry minutes later. i wouldn't want to eat either if i choked every time. so the one side feeding should help this issue.

we will see how it goes, i am trying all of this for one week, and reanalyzing then. i need to work on getting rid of the nipple shield if i get the other issues under control!

cross all fingers and toes please that this is the end of this bumpy road.

one more month

i decided the other day to give breastfeeding a try for one more month. we have made backwards steps again with the infections. i have tried every medicine, herb, vitamin, probiotic, pumping schedule, feeding schedule, hot compresses, cold compresses, creams, breast massages, etc., etc. so i feel i have given it a good try. i am still feeling very defeated, frustrated, and disappointed about it, but i don't think there is much else to do. i saw the breast specialist again and they asked what i would think if they told me i had to stop breast feeding to clear up this problem, i told them one more month. i am again (or still) experiencing shooting pains, itching, burning (for at least an hour after feeding, like i could shoot fire!!), and over all uncomfortableness (is that a word?) the doctor did mention a surgery but i feel like that is going a bit far. it would be to unclog the damaged ducts, but then i would leak milk through the holes from the surgery, and there is no guarantee that it would solve all the issues.

so the plan is to keep trying for now, i am going to stop pumping for the time being because it is again becoming painful. i am feeding kinsley with a nipple shield which is annoying but better then the bottle for me. i will talk with the LC again next week and see what they say. i am also going to ask if it is possible to ween kinsley dry up and then restart the milk production with a pill (yes they have a medication that will do that) i just wonder if we could start fresh would the problem be gone. it is worth asking. obviously i really want to make this work, my stubbornness is helping me hang in there for sure. i never thought i would put this much in to trying, but when all the problems started it bothered me a lot more then i thought it would that i couldn't feed her. it is just something i really want to do.

so we will see what happens between now and basically thanksgiving.

1 month appt

we had Kinsley's 1 month appt. yesterday. the doctor said she looks good and is nice and healthy. she weighed 10 lbs. 6oz. (75 percentile) and was 22 inches long 55 percentile). her head is now 15 inches.

not much else to say about that, we had a non eventful appt.

SMILES
they asked if Kinsley was occasionally smiling yet...it was funny cause i just said the other day that i thought she was smiling on purpose. she does smile sometimes and it is great, they are still very few and far between but they are happening!!!! we have at least one on camera i will post later.

BREASTFEEDING
i have started breastfeeding again, we started the other day with every other feeding and now i am doing every feeding, i am still not healed all the way but i figured if pumping hurt the same as feeding her then i would rather just feed her. i am still on meds ad they still don;t know why i am not responding to them as i should be. hopefully this will all clear up soon. i am using a nipple shield right now and i am pretty sore, i can't seem to get her on deep enough. we are both still learning, and i am lucky to have such a patient little girl.

Tomorrow is officially one month!!! can you believe it?

breast feeding update

today i went to a breast specialist to get to the bottom of all these issues we are having. it turns out the meds never fully worked so the mastitis and thrush have never gone away. so she changed my meds and prescribed a new one and hopefully this works. i will go back and see her again on tuesday and then to the LC again to hopefully put kinsley on the breast to feed. we will see. so for now i will continue pumping every 2 hours...fun times! i am still very sore, itchy, burning, and having sharp pains. that is all for now i will post next week how the follow up goes.

big update

ok here we go!

well, kinsley is 2 weeks old today! wow that went super fast. she is definitely more awake and alert, and i feel like she has a pretty strong neck. i feel like she is a pretty strong baby in general.

BREASTFEEDING:
all i can say right now is OUCH!!! we have gone to 2 lactation consultants now and we are still not fixed. yesterday things went from bad to worse, i have mastitis in both breasts, thrush, multiple blocked ducts and a massive amount of swelling. my nipples are the size of nickles when i am done pumping..that is crazy! i have breast swelling also. we are going back on friday if the pain has gone down by 90% to try and see if we can get kinsley back on the breast. for now we are pumping and she is taking the bottle just fine. she is a powerful sucker and will really suck on anything, it soothes her alot.if friday doesn't work we will go on monday. i already feel better since yesterday. the LC gave me larger flanges for the pump so all my swelling could fit without adding pain and irritation. i also think all the meds are kicking in. so we are hanging in there for now, hopefully good news soon!

Mom and Dad:
we are tired!!! up every 2 hours to pump and then whenever kinsley gets up to eat also, so sleeping isn't even kind of happening these last few days. other then that we are doing pretty good.

we know all will be well soon and we will look back on these first few weeks and it will seem like nothing. i am just glad right now that my pain has gone down i was in pain all day and nothing could even touch me. so that is a step in the right direction. Kinsley is hanging in there too. she is such a good baby. not too fussy (YET!!) she loves to be held when falling asleep, but will also sleep fine in the pack and play. we have tried the swing and bouncy seat a couple times and get mixed reviews. although she is a car baby, she is content and asleep usually before we get out of the neighborhood even though she screams when we put her in the car seat!

we will post more pics soon, i need to be more rested to deal with all that!
